learning experience Lumiere All-School Film Fest, now in its 11 year just like the Reno Film Festival, was developed as an independent project by Paul McFarlane, a Sparks High School teacher and Vice President of the Reno Film Festival Board of Directors. This annual event attracts entries from a number of elementary thru high schools and even a couple of colleges. Most entries are from the Reno/Sparks, but the fest is open to all students around the world K-16. In the 21st century, media literacy is vital to K- 16 student success within academic and future work settings. Students need to use higher thinking skills to understand, analyze and interpret the vast opportunities of media careers available today. Current research says that in order to thrive and survive in the workforce students will also need to develop the creative side of their brains. With this research in mind, schools across the country have been brainstorming ways to foster creativity in the classroom setting. Student film projects are a perfect way to foster creativity and allow for cross-curricular learning opportunities. Student- created media, through its involvement in the world of computers, video, sound and photography, is a proven avenue. Reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, teamwork and leadership are all used when students venture into the world of film- making. There is a place for any students interested in filmmaking as it is not
